ISO 14001 to be updated in 2026

7 de May de 2026

The new ISO 14001:2026 updates the international environmental management standard and marks a new transition schedule for companies certified to the 2015 version.

An update focused on corporate sustainability

ISO 14001:2026 is the new edition of the international standard for environmental management systems and replaces ISO 14001:2015. According to the documentation analyzed, ISO announced its publication on April 15, 2026, with a focus on providing clearer, more reliable and measurable guidance for organizations.

The standard maintains its role as the global benchmark for environmental management systems. ISO 14001 helps organizations to improve their performance, reduce costs and communicate compliance, while reinforcing their credibility and contributing to the protection of the planet.

For amec companies, this update is especially relevant because it affects companies that are already ISO 14001:2015 certified or that use this certification as a business requirement in industrial supply chains, tenders, international customers or ESG policies.

Main changes in the new edition

The update does not completely redesign the standard, but rather clarifies and adapts it to current environmental priorities. The 2026 edition strengthens clarity, usability and alignment with issues such as climate change, biodiversity and resource efficiency.

Among the main changes is a greater integration of the environmental management system with the company’s strategy. Environmental risks and opportunities, including climate change, and the life-cycle approach, from procurement to the end of life of products and services, are also gaining more weight.

The new edition pays more attention to external processes, products and services, which implies a more structured look at suppliers and the supply chain. It also strengthens the review of environmental performance and measurable results, and improves alignment with other ISO management systems.

ISO indicates that the standard is designed to integrate with other management systems, such as ISO 9001 for quality or ISO 45001 for health and safety. This integration makes it possible to align systems, streamline internal and external audits, and contribute to overall quality, safety and excellence objectives.

Impact for certified companies

Companies certified to ISO 14001:2015 do not automatically lose their certification. The documentation states that they will remain valid during the transition period, although they must migrate to ISO 14001:2026 before the end of this period.

ANAB indicates that a transition timeframe of around three years should be anticipated, while SGS puts the deadline at April 2029. For industrial companies, this timeline makes the transition a relevant process both from the point of view of compliance and positioning towards customers, international supply chains and ESG requirements.

Recommendations to initiate the transition

For companies already certified, it is prudent to initiate an internal review of the environmental system prior to the next follow-up audit or recertification. The first step will be to compare the current system with the new requirements of ISO 14001:2026.

The environmental context analysis should also be reviewed, especially in relation to climate risks, biodiversity, resources and supply chain. Based on this diagnosis, companies can update procedures, documentation and environmental objectives when necessary.

Coordination with the certification body will be key to define the transition schedule. In addition, the preparation of internal teams prior to the audit will facilitate an orderly adaptation to the new requirements of the standard.

ISO recalls that certification is optional, although it can be used as an effective way to convey environmental commitment to customers, regulators and business partners. The standard can also be applied internally to improve environmental performance without the need for external certification.
