The European Commission has approved the extension of the suspension of trade rebalancing measures between the European Union and the United States until August 6, 2026.
These rebalancing measures, initially adopted in July 2025, included additional tariffs on imports from the United States and restrictions on certain EU exports in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum, automotive vehicles and components, aluminum cans, and a wide range of agricultural and industrial products.
The extension of the suspension is part of the political agreement reached between the EU and the United States in July 2025, subsequently confirmed by a joint statement in August of the same year. Under this agreement, the United States undertook to immediately reduce tariffs on EU products, with a maximum rate of 15% ad valorem, while both parties continue to work on the normalization of their trade relations.
With this decision, the Commission considers that it is not necessary for the time being to reactivate the retaliatory measures or to advance the WTO proceedings, as long as the implementation of the political agreement is maintained. However, the regulation makes it clear that the EU’s legal position remains unchanged and that it continues to consider the US safeguard measures to be incompatible with WTO rules.
The Commission will review the situation in the light of developments in bilateral trade relations and reserves the right to take further action in the event of changes in compliance with the agreement.
