According to Parliament, these actions <strong>undermine stability, predictability and confidence in transatlantic trade relations<\/strong> by using tariffs as a mechanism of political coercion. <\/p><h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><br>What is in suspense<\/strong><\/h5><p>The so-called <strong>Turnberry Agreement<\/strong> provided, among other things, for the <strong>elimination of tariffs on U.S. industrial products<\/strong> entering the EU and the establishment of tariff quotas for certain agri-food products. In return, the United States maintained a 15% tariff on most European exports. <\/p><p>With the Parliament&#8217;s decision, <strong>the EU will not implement its part of the agreement<\/strong>, as parliamentary ratification is an essential step for its entry into force.<\/p><h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><br>Current situation and next steps<\/strong><\/h5><p>The suspension <strong>is not definitive<\/strong>, but will be maintained <strong>until the threats cease<\/strong> and the U.S. shows willingness to resume a path of cooperation. In the meantime, the agreement <strong>does not enter into force<\/strong> and its processing is frozen sine die. <\/p><p>At the same time, the Parliament&#8217;s Trade Committee has announced that it will ask the European Commission to <strong>activate the anti-coercion mechanism<\/strong>, which opens the door to possible countermeasures if the situation worsens.<\/p><h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><br>Impact for commercial relations<\/strong><\/h5><p>The decision introduces a <strong>new factor of uncertainty<\/strong> in EU-US trade relations, which remain one of the main axes of international trade.
