class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>The ECB has decided to maintain interest rates at restrictive levels (2.00% deposit, 2.15% financing and 2.40% marginal) in a context of high uncertainty, especially due to the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-318f5b99 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"318f5b99\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ca8d400 elementor-widget class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The key is not only to reduce current inflation, but also to prevent long-term expectations from becoming unanchored. If businesses and households anticipate persistently high inflation, they will tend to adjust prices and wages upwards, generating a spiral that will be difficult to control. <\/p><h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><br>Anatomy of inflation<\/strong><\/h5><p>The inflation forecast for 2026 has been revised upwards to <strong>2.6%<\/strong> mainly due to the conflict in the Middle East. The ECB is monitoring two levels of contagion: <\/p><ul><li><strong>Indirect effects:<\/strong> Higher energy costs are passed on to other goods and services (core inflation, which excludes energy and food, is estimated at <strong>2.3% by 2026<\/strong>).<\/li><li><strong>Second-round effects:<\/strong> The risk that rising energy prices will lead to excessive wage hikes which, in turn, will feed back into inflation. For now, growth in compensation per employee has slowed to <strong>3.7%<\/strong> (from 4.0%), which gives the ECB some room for confidence. <\/li><\/ul><h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><br>Growth prospects<\/strong><\/h5><p>Although they have revised growth for 2026 downward (only <strong>0.9%<\/strong>), the ECB identifies pillars of support that prevent a deep recession:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Private consumption:<\/strong> Driven by a strong labor market with historically low unemployment levels.<\/li><li><strong>Public and strategic investment:<\/strong> Government spending on <strong>defense and infrastructure<\/strong>, along with business investment in digitization and R&amp;D, are offsetting weak exports.<\/li><\/ul><h5><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">_<\/span><br>Alternative scenarios<\/strong><\/h5><p>Given the volatility of oil and gas supply, the ECB is not relying on its &#8220;baseline scenario&#8221; alone. They have analyzed <strong>alternative scenarios<\/strong> where a prolonged disruption of energy supply would raise inflation higher than expected and reduce growth further. <\/p><p><strong>1. The &#8220;protracted disruption&#8221; scenario.<\/strong><\/p><p>The main alternative scenario analyzed contemplates a <strong>prolonged and severe disruption of oil and gas supply<\/strong>.
